PSAT to SAT: what your score predicts

Fall 2026 PSAT/NMSQT scores are released in waves, depending on when your school returned its answer sheets: October 22, 2026, November 5, 2026, November 12, 2026. Once you have yours, this is what it means for the SAT.

PSAT total 1000 → if you took the SAT tomorrow, a plausible range is about

940–1060

The PSAT and SAT report on vertically aligned scales, so a PSAT score is roughly what the same student would score on the SAT at that moment, give or take typical day-to-day variation. The SAT scale runs 40 points higher at each end (up to 1600), so the top is not a cap. Any real movement comes from prep between now and the test.

How to read a PSAT score

The PSAT reports two section scores from 160 to 760, so the total runs 320 to 1520. The SAT uses the same skills and the same kind of questions, scored 200 to 800 per section. The scales are built to line up: a 1100 on the PSAT and a 1100 on the SAT describe about the same level of skill, at least on the day of the test.

What actually changes the number

Not the calendar. Students who take the PSAT in October and the SAT in March without studying usually land near the same place. The gains come from finding the two or three skills that cost the most points and drilling those. A PSAT score report tells you the broad categories; a diagnostic that tags every question by skill tells you exactly where.

The free diagnostic takes about 30 minutes, returns a projected SAT range you can compare with your PSAT, and ranks your skills by how many points each one would move.
