Free SAT Central Ideas and Details practice questionsdigital SAT, 2026 format

A short text (25–150 words) followed by one question: what is the main idea, or what detail does the text actually state? The wrong answers are usually true-sounding claims the text never makes, or a minor detail dressed up as the point.

Answer each question, then read why the right answer is right and why the tempting one is wrong.

Question 1

Reading and Writing
Mangrove forests are often valued for sheltering fish nurseries and buffering coastlines against storms, but their most consequential service may be invisible. Because mangrove roots trap sediment and slow decomposition in waterlogged soil, these forests store carbon at three to five times the rate of mature tropical rainforests per hectare. When mangroves are cleared for shrimp farms or resorts, that stored carbon is released within a few years, which means that destroying a hectare of mangrove does more climate damage than clearing a hectare of rainforest.

Which choice best states the main idea of the text?

Question 2

Reading and Writing
Anansi, the trickster spider of Akan oral tradition, crossed the Atlantic with enslaved West Africans and became one of the most widely told folk figures in the Caribbean. Scholars attribute the stories' survival partly to their form: short, self-contained tales that a single teller could carry in memory without books or ritual objects, and that could be adapted to new settings — a Ghanaian forest became a Jamaican hillside — without losing the cunning at their core. Their content mattered too. Tales in which the weak outwit the powerful spoke directly to the experience of people held in bondage.

According to the text, what is one reason Anansi stories were able to survive the Middle Passage?

Question 3

Reading and Writing
The Antarctic icefish has no red blood cells and no hemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen in nearly every other vertebrate. It survives because the water it lives in is so cold that oxygen dissolves in it abundantly, and because the fish's large heart and wide blood vessels move enough plasma to carry the dissolved gas directly. What would be fatal anywhere else is workable in the Southern Ocean — which also means that as the ocean warms, the icefish has less margin than almost any other fish on Earth.

Which choice best states the main idea of the text?
